Rotary engages in child learning

About 100 Year 5 students from Brookfield Primary, Bellevue Primary and Merivale School are today undertaking seven literacy challenges in Reading with Rotary.

Rotary spokesperson Colin Caws says the content of the challenges have been planned with school involvement.

He says this makes sure the programme is delivered within, and meets the need of, the school curriculum.

'It won't be all about reading and writing – communication and literacy, in today's world, is oral, pictorial, written and electronic.

'Some people need special skills.

'They can learn about the legend of Mauao; they will watch and describe boats; there will be a cruise liner in port, which will be a point of interest too.”

A computer centre will also be available to help students learn to present information, as well as digital cameras to allow students to take pictures during the day.

Colin says the day has been broken down into six 30 minute slots, which will allow 25 minutes of activity, and then five minutes to move between each activity.

'Each child will complete six of the seven activities. They will be issued with an adventure passport on arrival and will have to finish each activity to obtain a visa.

'At the end of the day everyone will come together to celebrate what has been achieved, and on production of their visas, each child will be presented with a book to take home and read with their families.”
