Tahatai Coast School has come out victorious in the Tauranga City Library Inter-School Book quiz.

The competition, which is now in its second year, brings together year five and six students from four Tauranga schools – Arataki Primary School, Omanu School, Tahatai Coast School and Papamoa Primary School.

Their most recent quiz was held at Mount Maunganui library on Wednesday June 27, and saw all schools competing against each other in four rounds of questions.

The first three rounds test the students' knowledge of books by award-winning or shortlisted authors, and the fourth is general book knowledge.

Tauranga City Libraries provided each of the schools copies of the books in advance including The Short But Brilliant Career of Lucas Weed by Chrissie Walker, Bastion Point: 507 days on Takaparawha by Tania Roxborogh, and Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth by Frank Cottrell Boyce.

Teachers from the competition schools say the competition was tough with all four schools demonstrating impressive knowledge of the books, but ultimately it was Tahatai Coast School who came out victorious with 31.5/40, taking the trophy from previous winners Omanu School.

'This has been an engaging event which required commitment, it's challenging and fun,” says Tahatai Coast School teacher Martin Dijkgraaf

'Our students love it and they are also students that don't get to go to other cluster inter-school events,” says Arataki Primary School teacher Kylie Whitehead.

The quiz was followed by a prize giving and a celebratory morning tea to thank all of the participants for their hard work preparing for the quiz.

All of the students have agreed they would love to compete again.
