Rena: the waiting game

Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) has announced no new updates this morning, as the first observation flight of today is underway.

All eyes have been on the stranded vessel as storms and rough seas have been pounding the ship, which is precariously perched on the Astrolabe Reef and is gradually splitting in two halves.

On Saturday, lubricants, hydraulic and waste oils from the engine room of the cargo vessel Rena were transferred onto the Awanuia while preparations continue for hot tapping the last tank of heavy fuel oil remaining on the vessel.

Meanwhile on the shore, the 100th volunteer group is said to be heading out to clean Papamoa today. Three clean up teams at Papamoa, Te Tumu and Maketu were launched this morning, and planning is underway to begin trials of surf washing and beach grooming next week.

A team from the Oiled Wildlife Response was on the shoreline of Mt Maunganui overnight, checking for oiled birds. There was only one oiled bird still needing to be washed at the oiled wildlife facility, with a further 400 birds under care. This includes the dotterels which were pre-emptively caught and are housed in purpose-built aviaries.

Ya know what would happen back then, well the sherriff would put together a bunch a guys from the local Saloon and head off after them looking for the trail that them vermen left behind em'. When we catches them we'd a string em up see, now there was a good reason for that ta happen, it means we don't have to house and feed em for the next 20 years and even more important no need of a meeting with some smart alex lawyer talkin some sweet words to getem off the hook. All we needed them for was to dig a hole and count the bodies. An occupation far more befittin the abilities.

There would seem to be no plans to remove containers from the ship itself, other than from the sea floor or the beaches, apparently this is because the lifting gear for containers is unable to tilt to accomodate the angle of the Rena's list of 20% or so. Surley it is a 5 minute job to design and provide a variation so as that is not a problem and get some containers off the ship at last. There must be a heap a containers worthy of saving out there before they all end up in the sea?

Sure are

Need the weight

Hey- I am no expert - but its my understanding that the weight of the containers and their contents is what has helped the shipwreck to stay lodged on the reef??Guess if they took them off (by whatever means) the ship would be lighter, lifted off and we would have had the whole 12,000 tonnes spewed into the water and onto the beaches.Lets leave the decisions to those that know what to do eh
