Rena rally to bury anger

People are being invited to join a rally in a bid to let go of frustrations and anger that have arisen from the stranding of the Rena.

The MV Rena Rally is being held tomorrow at 1pm to give people the opportunity move on from the event and focus on the future.

People gathered at the base of Mt Drury as part of a church gathering recently to talk with others about how they felt about the Rena situation in an attempt to focus on the future.

Event organiser Rachael Rolston believes its time to hold a symbolic burial of the rage and sadness brought about because of the Rena.

'Our emotions have gone from frustration to fury and we've taken out on politicians, the crew, the captain, Maritime New Zealand and the ship's owners.

'We need to let it (emotions) go and focus on the future.”

Rachael says they will gather at Mount Ocean Sports Club in Mount Maunganui at 1pm before proceeding with a symbolic funeral procession to Mt Drury Reserve.

'When we get here, we will talk take the Choysa Response (have a cup of tea) and talk about how best to move on.”

I have more admiration for the volunteers who helped with the clean-up. Thank goodness some people today still actually do something.

Time could be better spent

I do hope that these people are going to be spending their morning picking up oil on the beach rather than making signs to wave around. I would have thought 1pm would have been a better time for them to go to Papamoa beach and applaud the hard workers sieving the sand for hours. Making muffins for workers would also be better than making noise.

And the choysa response

could also be better done at the volunteers station rather than the base of Mt Drury. Woe is me doesn;t get beaches clean.

Thank you Rachael for organizing this. I have no doubt that you have also done your bit in the beach cleanup. Despite the negative comments (it's too easy to be critical of someone like yourself who's actually trying to help us all cope with the turbulent, mixed feelings that get generated by a disaster like this) tomorrow's event is an important step to bring our community together, support and understand each other and come through it all "whole". That doesn't mean you can't also do practical things like clean up oil. It's not one or the other. Both are necessary. Good on you for your initiative to 'heal' the community. Many members of the public have a lot of lingering doubts and questions about the response to this oil (and cargo)spill. It's important we support and talk to each other as well as clean up the beaches and help the wildlife affected. AND it is important that we are not afraid to ask some hard questions of our politicians. I hope there is a good turnout tomorrow and our community shows appropriate appreciation of your energy, time and spirit.

Great Initiative

The beach clean-up is happening and will continue to keep happening. Besides that, too all you perfect people out there, not everyone is actually physically able to get on their knees and pick up tar off the beach, many people are affected by this issue and there is always going to be a few different ways we can all help. How unthoughtful is it to put someone's idea down when it has the potential to help people in our community. Have you thought about the elderly population that live on our coastline that have been here for many years, bought up their families here and that have seen the changes. Do you know if they all have support or even have the means to get accurate information about what's happening on their doorstop? You don't. So once you've made and delivered your batch of muffins to the volunteer station, pop down to Mt Drury and see if there's anything you can share. You don't have to walk around the block with the rally if you are unable. I hope to see you there
