Bayfair bus stop closure

The bus stop at Bayfair Shopping Centre will close on Wednesday.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council says the closure will affect numerous Bayhopper routes as well as services to and from Rotorua, Whakatāne and Te Puke.

The new Farm St interchange is still under construction so passengers need to be aware of the temporary changes that will affect their trips, says a statement from the council.

From June 20 please board at the following locations:

  • For services to Papamoa, Whakatane, Rotorua and the Te Puke Shopper please use the bus stop in front of 3 Grenada St.
  • Tauranga, Greerton, Maungatapu or Mount services please use the bus stop in front of 30 Girven Road (fronting St John) or the bus stop in front of 10 Grenada St (near Zambuk Way).
  • Te Puke Commuter, Matapihi and Mangatawa passengers please use the bus stop at 30 Girven Rd.

"Please note the four bus stops on Gloucester Street North of Monowai St are closing permanently, the bus now turns at Monowai St.

"Passengers are encouraged to download Transit app and enable notifications. Transit provides real-time bus information and service updates on Tauranga, Te Puke and Katikati/Omokoroa routes and is available free from the App Store or Google Play.

"Council apologises for any inconvenience caused due to these changes, please note this is temporary and passengers will be informed once the new interchange on Farm St is in operation."

OH, GREAT - another assumption that everyone has

a CELLPHONE!! These statements ""Passengers are encouraged to download Transit app and enable notifications. Transit provides real-time bus information and service updates on Tauranga, Te Puke and Katikati/Omokoroa routes and is available free from the App Store or Google Play."" are assuming that everyone has a cellphone, but many of the people using the buses are in the low income bracket, and can't AFFORD a darn phone! The assumption that "everyone has one" is an utter fallacy, and the bright sparks that make decisions like access to bus timetables and routes on this assumption certainly need to wake up to the fact not everyone has a cellphone!

Yet again, outstanding planning by TCC

Bayfair bus stop closes before new interchange is operational. Result is three different bus stop locations depending upon destination. As much as they say they want people to use public transport they seem to go out of their way to make it as difficult as possible. And as an aside, @ SML - if you can afford the fare you can afford the phone (that's why parents find it cheaper to drive their children to school rather than put them on a bus).

How??

How hard can it be to coordinate timelines to open the new bus stop before the old closes.

Also, isn’t the push for more people to use public transport?? How does closing bus stops “permanently” encourage this?
