First day of winter

Today is officially the first day of winter.

In today's weather forecast we are expecting cloudy periods. A few showers from midday and northeast breezes.

It's a three-clothing layer day today with a high of 16 and an overnight low of nine degrees. Humidity is 98 per cent.

High tide is at 8.40am and low tide is at 2.50pm. There's a sea swell of 0.2m, with a sea temperature of 17 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.01pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 4 and 7pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1960 New Zealand had its first official TV broadcast. Broadcast from Shortland St in central Auckland, New Zealand's first official television transmission began at 7.30pm.

In world history on this day in 1915 Germany conducted the first zeppelin air raid over England. In 1939 the Douglas DC-4 made its first passenger flight from Chicago to New York.

Today is the birthday of English poet John Masefield. Born in 1878 he once wrote "I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky; and all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by."
