Another fine southerly day

In today's weather forecast we are expecting a fine day with southerly breezes.

It's a four-clothing and one-windproof layer day today with a high of 15 and an overnight low of 4 degrees. Humidity is 92 per cent.

Low tide is at 1.20pm and high tide is at 7.40pm. There's a sea swell of 0.1m, with a sea temperature of 17 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.02pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 2.30 and 5.30pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1901 New Zealand said no to federation with Australia. A 10-man Royal Commission reported unanimously that New Zealand should not become a state of the new Commonwealth of Australia.

In 1959 the Auckland harbour bridge opened. New Zealand's best-known bridge opened after four years of construction.The need for better transport links between Auckland city and the North Shore had long been the subject of inquiry and agitation.

In 1996 a totally New Zealand Royal Honours System was established with the institution of the New Zealand Order of Merit, which replaced the various British State Orders of Chivalry.

In world history on this day in 1848 William Young patented the ice cream freezer. In 1889 the brassiere was invented. In 1971 NASA launched Mariner 9, the first satellite to orbit Mars.

Today is the birthday of American poet Countee Cullen, who was born in 1903. It's also the birthday of scientist Joseph W. Kennedy. Born in 1916, he was the co-discoverer of plutonium. A quote from Countee Cullen who once wrote "I have a rendezvous with life."
