Sun and southerlies in the Bay

In today's weather forecast we are expecting a fine day with southerly breezes.

It's a four-clothing and one-windproof layer day today with a high of 15 and an overnight low of 4 degrees. Humidity is 79 per cent.

Low tide is at 12.40pm and high tide is at 7pm. There's a sea swell of 0.1m, with a sea temperature of 17 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.03pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1905, NZ opened the world's first state-run maternity hospital. In addition to providing care for expectant mothers, the new St Helens hospital in Wellington trained midwifery students.

In 1947, Mabel Howard became the first female Cabinet minister. When Howard was appointed minister of health and minister in charge of child welfare, she became the first woman to serve as a Cabinet minister in a Commonwealth country.

In 1953 Hillary and Tenzing reached the summit of Everest. A beekeeper from New Zealand, Edmund Hillary, and the Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first people to stand on the summit of the world's highest peak.

In world history on this day in 1849 a patent for lifting vessels was granted to Abraham Lincoln. In 1911 the Indianapolis 500 was run for the first time. In 1951 C. F. Blair became the first man to fly over the North Pole in single-engine plane.

Today is the birthday of English writer G.K. Chesterton. Born in 1874, he once wrote "There is a road from the eye to the heart that does not go through the intellect." And "The way to love anything is to realize that it might be lost."
