High tide is at 11.10am and low tide is at 5.30pm. There's a sea swell of .3m with a sea temperature of 18 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.07pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 5 and 7pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1840 Lieutenant-Governor William Hobson proclaimed British sovereignty over all of New Zealand – the North Island on the basis of cession through the Treaty of Waitangi, and South and Stewart Islands by right of discovery.

When sovereignty was proclaimed, Māori signatories to the treaty were still being actively sought. New Zealand was a dependency of New South Wales until May 1841, when it became a separate British colony with Hobson as its governor.

In world history on this day in 996, 16-year-old Otto III was crowned the Roman Emperor. In 1506 Christopher Columbus died.

In 1881 the American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton. In 1927 Charles Lindbergh landed in Paris completing the first solo air crossing of the Atlantic.

Today is the birthday of Plato, the Greek philosopher. Born in 427 BC, Plato once said "We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light", and "You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation". It is also the birthday of physiologist Willem Einthoven. Born in 1860, Willem was the inventor of the electrocardiogram.
