Shellfish oil risk zones created

Oil pollution of the coastal Bay of Plenty has resulted in Toi Te Ora Public Health splitting the coast into three shellfish zones.

The Zones are red, amber and green, with the red zone including most of the coast from Waihi Beach to Ohiwa harbour.

People are advised not to gather or eat shellfish from the red zone which includes Matakana, Motiti and Whale Islands, until further notice.

The amber zone is the Eastern Bay of Plenty coastline from Ohiwa Harbour entrance to Cape Runaway, including all inshore islands, rocky outcrops and estuaries in these areas.

The amber zone includes areas where there are not yet confirmed reports of oil but there is a high risk of oil contamination being found.

Toi Te Ora says any seafood that has a petrol-like or fuel-like smell should definitely not be eaten.

The green zone includes the east coast of the Coromandel peninsula north from Waihi Beach.

Shellfish, crayfish, crabs, kina or seaweed may be taken from these areas but people are being advised to be cautious.
