Fire crews were called to the blaze on Hinemoa Ave around 9.15pm.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Scott Osmond says firefighters arrived at the scene to find the single-storey dwelling well ablze.

He says there were lots of calls to the fire from members of the public and that the fire was "clearly visible".

Four fire appliances - three from Taupō and one from Kinloch - arrived to find the single-storey house well ablaze.

While no-one was in the house at the time of the fire, Scott says a neighbour had been taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Along with police, a fire safety investigator has been called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.

The police were called in because drug-related items were found at the scene, says a police spokesperson.
