Tauranga is alive this afternoon at the opening of the Downtown Carnival as part of the 56th National Jazz Festival.
An exciting jazz hub filled with two days of music and entertainment is in the CBD and is set to keep you dancing all weekend.
There's multiple stages along the Strand, extending through Red Square, and music for everyone to enjoy, from jazz and swing, to blues and funk.

Keep the kids happy at the Family Fun Zone and shop until you drop with the Downtown retailers.
Then grab a seat at one of The Strand's many fine bars and restaurants to enjoy a tantalising meal with your jazz.

The event runs today and tomorrow from midday-6pm.
Road closures are in place on the Strand between Harrington Street and Devonport Road. Wharf Street is also closed from the Strand to Willow Street; Hamilton Street is closed from the Strand to Willow Street. These closures take effect from 5am on Friday March 30 until 9pm on Monday April 2.
Entry is a gold coin donation. For more information visit www.jazz.org.nz

My Thorts

This event was great only as I hadn't been for a few years, I was a bit disheartened to be asked for a Gold coin donations, I guess this is new, however, I do not carry coin on myself, so to be asked for a donation was a worry. I couldn't get myself and my two granddaughters in. The Security guard was also a tad off, as she asked me to open my purse, just to see if I had any coinage, Im Sorry BUT!!! I thort this was very rude of her. AND also the way she asked for it. Sorry People but I feel this should have been more advertised, then I may have been more organised.
Hmmm

Where the hell was the jazz music? Total noise and very little else. The people involved with this festival need to return there fee. someone is making money and doing nothing to promote jazz music.

If what this woman is true and I have no reason to doubt her this is disgraceful asking to look into a womans purse is not on, and the organisers owe this lady an apology, to be asking for money in the first place is just over the top at this sort of event never happened in the past and in my opinion should be scrapped.

This was advertised but in my opinion can not be forced. I always thought a Donation was a voluntary thing and you could not refuse a person because they did not contribute.Maybe someone can enlighten me on this one.
