A light aircraft has crashed near Waihi this afternoon.

Two people on board are injured but they are not thought to be seriously hurt.

Police say the aircraft went down near SH2.

Fire and Emergency NZ Northern Communications Centre shift manager Murray Bannister says the aircraft may be a microlite.

'I do believe there were two occupants with moderate to minor injuries.”

There is no information on where the aircraft was travelling from or to.
