A Bethlehem schoolgirl renowned for her kind heart and willingness to give to others, is proving good deeds always pay off.

Emma Mischewski, 8, is one of nine children from around New Zealand who have been selected to join the Premier Easter Hunt with Prime Minister Jacinda Adern as part of a nationwide the Breeze radio competition.

The hunt will take place at Premier House in Wellington on Wednesday.

Emma is known throughout the city for her many acts of kindness which are all part of a self-titled project she calls her 'mission”.

The youngster made headlines last year when she began selling feijoas from a roadside stand, to help raise money for those less fortunate.

With the money, Emma and her mother Helen began buying personal care items to make into care packs for the homeless and the needy.

The project grew legs and was quickly supported by organisations like Women's Refuge, All Children Matter, Under the Stars and Kai Aroha, who helped Emma to distribute the baskets.

'She's been nominated as a local hero with the Breeze before and she's well known to many in the community,” says mum, Helen.

Helen says this may be why she was also nominated for this Easter Hunt competition.

'It's a lovely nomination Emma received from a woman named Kerri. It spoke all about her mission and what organisations the care packs have already gone to.

'The thing is, in the information which had to be included with the submission you also needed to know a lot of details about the child you were nominating; including their age and whether they are able to fly out on a specific day.

'Kerri wanted to keep it a secret but of course she had to get in touch with us to find out this information, so I knew about it from the start.

'For Emma though it was a surprise, I randomly said to her one day ‘how would you like to go on an Easter Egg Hunt with the Prime Minister' and she said ‘oh mum that would be so cool!'.

'We kind of left it for a bit and didn't think much would come of it and then the Breeze Tauranga ended up contacting us saying they had some exciting news to tell us and that they would be announcing it on air.”

She says Emma had the biggest grin on her face when they announced she was a winner.

'But of course it was on radio, so they couldn't see it.”

Emma says she's excited for the hunt.

'Some of my friends at school don't believe me, so they've asked me to ask the Prime Minister for her autograph.”

As well as having the once-in-a-lifetime experience to hunt Easter eggs with the prime minister during Easter, the trip also includes flights and accommodation.

'Emma's looking forward to ordering room service,” says Helen.

The two will fly out to Wellington from Tauranga Airport at midday.
