As the sun set at Mount Maunganui on Saturday night, the ‘We Run The Night’ running festival at Mount Drury got underway.
Fully booked out with over 1800 entrants the ‘Hopt Soda -We Run The Night’ was not just about the running.
It combined music with running, with a free concert which started at 3pm at Mt Drury. Participants and the public were encouraged to donate a gold coin to Lifeline.
The lineup of artists included DJ Spectrum, TBC, Ngamoe Morgan, Graeme James and Tauranga Samba.
As the afternoon turned to night the running started.
The kids 3km dash was the first group to leave at 7.28pm followed by all distances leaving at 7.30pm. The course cut off time was 10.45pm.
The distances that competitors could run or walk included the 21km half marathon, 14km, 7km and the new 3km kids dash.
The course was all flat, set out along Marine Parade and provided an opportunity to dress up in fluoro and bright colours, and run by moonlight.
Joanne Moore and Jodi Botting, both from Auckland, and Ashleigh Moat from Gisborne stayed at local backpackers.
“We haven’t done this particular event before,” says Joanne. “It’s the first time. We’ve done other walks before.”
“The longest one I’ve ever done is 5km,” says Ashleigh. “Tonight we’re doing 14km.”
“My understanding is it goes to the end of the beach and back, about three-and-a-half kilometres,” says Joanne. “So two circuits for the 14km and three circuits for the 21km.”
