What’s On? Engines & Etiquette

Good morning, SunLive readers, and welcome to a fairly busy Sunday.

Although a lot event organisers favour Saturday, there's actually a bit of a selection today, for all you lovers of a good Sunday outing.

The weather looks to be playing ball too, with the MetService predicting a partly cloudy day with a high of 25 degrees and an overnight low of 19.

Lovers of all things with engines will have a difficult choice today as two excellent events take place in Mount Maunganui.

One is the Bay of Plenty Coastal Cruisers Motorcycle Club's motorcycle and hot rod show, which is on at 3 Cherokee Place from 10am-2pm.

'There's going to be cars and bikes on show - basically anything to do with motors,” says club president Wilky De Haas.

'We'll have stock cars, drag cars and vehicles from the Second World War. We'll also be doing burn outs at lunch time.”

Wilky says the event is an opportunity to show the community what the club is all about.

'We generally get about 2000-3000 people at these shows depending on the weather. This is the fifth time we have hosted it.

Nearby at Blake Park, the All Ford Day is back for its 19th year in the Bay of Plenty, and Ford Muscle Car Club president Barry Gordon says it's a must-see for fans of models old and new.

'We had more than 460 cars last year - all Ford-based - from classic Model Ts up to modern designs, including a display of the latest models from Ultimate Motor Group,” says Barry.

Taking part in the show is as easy as driving up on the day. Entrants pay a $5 gate fee and all vehicles on display go in the draw for spot prizes during the day, as well as awards in a number of categories, including best hotrod and best restoration.Gates open at 8am for vehicles, with the show running from 10am-3pm. Adults entry is $5, with kids under 14 free. Part of the proceeds from ticket sales will go towards a donation to Waipuna Hospice.

Brain Watkins House is also hosting a Vintage Garden Party, for those who love elegant clothes and good manners. The party will take place from 1.30-4pm, with entry only a gold coin donation.

Tauranga Historical Society committee member Brian Davies says it's the society's annual fundraiser, which will help keep Brain Watkins House in good condition.

'We've noticed some leaks from the recent rain, so they'll need to be fixed. The house can be quite expensive to run.”

There will be food stalls, afternoon tea, and live music with band ‘Back Porch', as well as guided tours of the 1880s home.
