A showery day on Dr Suess' birthday

Video and photos by Rosalie Liddle Crawford.

Today we are expecting a cloudy day, with a few showers and northeasterlies.

It's a one-clothing-layer day with a high of 23 and an overnight low of 19 degrees.

High tide is at 7.50am and low tide at 2pm. There's a sea swell of .6m, sea temperature is 21 degrees and sunset tonight is at 7.52pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is from 6 to 8pm.

This day in NZ history in 1865 missionary Carl Völkner was killed at Ōpotiki.

Local Māori adherents of a new religion, Pai Mārire, hung the Anglican Church Missionary Society missionary Carl Völkner from a willow tree near his church at Ōpōtiki.

This day in world history in 1908, an international conference on arms reduction opened in London.

Also on this day in 1908, Gabriel Lippmann introduced the new three-dimensional colour photography process at the Academy of Sciences. In 1917 the U.S. Congress passed the Jones Act making Puerto Rico a territory of the United States and making its inhabitants U.S. citizens.

In 1923 in Italy, Mussolini admitted that women have a right to vote, but declared that the time was not right. In 1943, the center of Berlin was bombed by the RAF. Some 900 tons of bombs were dropped in a half hour.

Today is the birthday of Henry Dreyfuss. He was the industrial designer of many things from telephones to the interior of the Boeing 707.

It's also the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, commonly known as Dr. Seuss, author of numerous children's books including 'The Cat in the Hat' and 'Green Eggs and Ham'. Both men were born on this day in 1904.

Henry Dreyfuss once said "The products we design are going to be ridden in, sat upon, looked at, talked into, activated, operated, or in some way used by people individually or en masse. If the point of contact between the product and the people becomes a point of friction, then the industrial designer has failed. If, on the other hand, people are made safer, more comfortable, more eager to purchase, more efficient-or just plain happier-the industrial designer has succeeded.”

Dr Seuss once said "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

Imagine if these two men had met!

Have a great day!
