Beached oil clean up issues

Organisational issues plagued the beach clean up today.

Two women cleaned all the Rena fuel oil that came ashore at Mount Maunganui this morning in two hours – while Fulton Hogan staff called in to do the job stood and watched.

Lana and Candice cleaned up the main beach today.

'They were so embarrassed,” says Lana Maguinness.

'They said they were waiting for their bosses to tell them what to do.”

It took Lana and Candice Benson about two hours to clean up the oil on the main beach.

They took their collection to the top of the beach where it was picked up by a passing tractor and trailer.

At Surf Road, Omanu, there was a Rotorua fire communications truck parked in the car park. The grumpy Rotorua fire fighter watching over says no-one's in charge of the clean-up, no-one knows what is happening and the entire operation is one big cluster ****.

Meanwhile, pictures are appearing on Facebook pages of more significant amounts of oil coming ashore in Papamoa East.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is repeating its call for people to stay off the beaches.

The men in the trailer were picking up bags of oil and sand.

The Rena oil spill response team is receiving reports that people are 'playing” with oil and attempting to clean it up.

Oil is not only toxic, but people doing this risk spreading the oil further and creating more harm to their local environment.

Anyone wishing to help the oil recovery effort or report oil should contact 0800 645 774.

People 'playing” with oil are also risk spreading it to their homes and other areas.

Pet owners are also urged to keep their animals off the beach.

Anyone concerned their pet may have been affected by oil should contact their local vet.

Sightings of any oiled wildlife should be reported to 0800 333 771.

How is it different the oil in the motor mower? Or, petrol from the car?

Give the locals a medal

Good on locals for ignoring the bureaucrats and getting into helping the clean-up. If correct, this report of inaction by those employed to do the job requires and answer from those at the very top. These columns are likely monitored by MPs and we deserve an explanation. The regional council shouldn't be discouraging locals, it should be giving them a medal.

Good on you ladies. What a joke Fulton Hogan. Gee, really looks like the ladies damaged the environment by cleaning it up.

Pay these volunteers

I assume the MP for Tauranga will ensure these good ladies are paid well for their efficient work while those Fulton Hugan guys were being paid to sit around and watch....

Pumping oil off a ship like that is not something that is easily done. 1.7 million litres is more than you can fit in your tinny. Blaming the current government is just ridiculous as though this has been caused by them? The blame lies squarely with those cutting corners to make the tide and those that let it happen.

The oil is very different from the petrol in your mower....It has been sprayed with a dispersant, which is toxic. I do hope these ladies are taking the proper precautions. Credit where credit is due, but we want you to stay safe....This stuff is very toxic and can be ingested via the skin and inhaled.....Please take care of yourselves. for doing something!! what a freakin' joke Fulton Hogan . . . without locals going out & doing something about this mess, there would be more oil than sand right now! I am totally disgusted in how this has been handled.

Different?

Because it's crude oil, not refined oil.

What do people not understand? They have been told to keep off the beaches, yes its heartbreaking that there is oil washing up on our beautiful beaches but do people not realise that if they dont clean it up properly they could be making it worse. They're hearts are in the right place but there are proceedures in place for a reason. And im sorry DGK but I totally disagree with you. Why should they be paid, they are volunteers. What happens if by doing it without any instruction they make it worse? The officials have issued statements in the local paper etc. They realise this is a marathon, not a sprint!
