Looking forward to know how hard it can be to upskill the neighbourhood in the clean up!

What we want to know

Posted on 11-10-2011 11:45 | By JSmithington

is that everything is being done to get the oil off this ship, that volunteers will be welcome to assist the beach clean-up, that over zealous high visibility vest wearing officials won't get bogged down in paperwork and OSH, and that our hard earned rates and taxes will not have to pay anything for this "accident." This should be fully paid by the party responsible. For goodness sake, show that NZ can once again hold its head up high for problem solving and ingenuity in the face of disaster. I hate to think of this turning into a do nothing response as has happened in NZ lately.

Downsizing

I'd like to know if National Party downsizing of government departments has lead to any of this slow response and oiled beaches?

Great Organisation

The people most effected have to travel to Tauranga. Typical attitude towards everyone on this side of the Bridge by Simon. Bring Back the Mount Council and cut us free from the parasites.

Will Lianne Dalziel be there to translate the spin?

I will go if that happens, would even pay entry.

Doddery Poms

Posted on 11-10-2011 12:18 | By Kin

Peoples hero "Jim" said NZ Maritime were a bunch of "doddery old Poms". I've just seen 2 of them on One News and they didn't sound like Poms. Very doddery though so good to see being useless is not the preserve of the Poms.

Hidden Agenda

Posted on 11-10-2011 12:22 | By SpeakUp

There are THREE purposely-built oil recovery vessels in NZ. The Tukuperu, the Taranui and the Kuaka are on stand-by. Also a whole arsenal of various booms, barges and skimmers are pictured on >>> http://www.maritimenz.govt.nz/Environmental/Responding-to-spills-and-pollution/Past-spill-responses/Image-gallery.asp <<< Where are these 3 ships? Where is all this equipment? Where were the specialists? Why were 4 days of PERFECT weather conditions wasted with inaction? Well, it could all be a hidden agenda. It looks like the owner of the vessel, the insurance and the salvage operators have secured a dirty deal with Maritime NZ whereby our response teams were held back in favor of the salvager's offer to deal with the situation, in order to avoid the cost for national disaster response. They rather cook their own salvage plan, to hell with NZ's environment and our beaches. The corporates are interested only in their money. A full investigation needs to be carried out ASAP. No stone should be left unturned. There are some people who are to be held responsible not only for the biggest environmental disaster our coast has ever seen but even more so for collusion with corporate interests.

why is this meeting at tauranga boys??? convenience for the HQ perhaps....but not for those being affected

Corexit!!

Posted on 11-10-2011 13:38 | By Shifting sand

I wish I were able to attend that meeting. Please, can someone bring up the subject of Corexit, and why it's being used on the oil slick. It is massively toxic to the environment and people. Look at the Gulf Coast Louisiana. people are still sick and dying from the use of this stuff!!! Sadly, the authorities there just covered this fact up!!! The Bay only has 1700 tons of oil to clean up not tens of millions of barrels of crude. Please, stop the use of Corexit. IT WILL DO TERRIBLE DAMAGE!!! More than the oil will.

Vessel stability complex

Posted on 11-10-2011 14:07 | By Resident

Not many people understand how complex vessel stability is...get a jar of water and half fill it and you will begin to understand, when you try to make it balance on its edge. This operation is very complex, and armchair criticism doesn't help. The primary goal is to remove the fuel oil, and they know how difficult it is given the amount of "slack tank" conditions exist on the vessel with water sloshing around in probably two of its cargo holds. Give the officials and the Government a break, they are doing their best, and did not create this situation.

not only the Mount residents

Posted on 11-10-2011 14:22 | By budgettga

that are being affected. There are many, many businesses that are being affected so I dont htink it matters where the meeting is, as long as the venue is big enough...somehow I dont think it will be. Be assured that the issue of the Coreit will be discussed.

I'm curious about the possibility

Posted on 11-10-2011 17:18 | By theschizzle

of a representative action lawsuit, and failing that what does Government intend to do to financially support the Bay's businesses who rely upon the tourist and beach trade to keep the doors open. Because a lot of doors are going to close now...

Thank goodness the National govt has downsized some govt depts. The only difference if they were still oversized would be that there were even more people running around wearing high visibility vests and clutching clipboards.

Hey Wazzok, You sound like the oil only affects you at the Mount, Look out your door, what about us, we live on the edge on the inner harbour, we got more to lose the you you just got a sandy beach, Easy clean up. The inner Harbours estuaries, we got more to lose and its gonna take longer to fix. Check the Maritme Web Site for times and dates. There are public meetings over your way, one @ Papamoa and one @ Mt. College
