Health warnings on seafood

Health authorities are warning people not to collect or consume any seafood from water with visible oil contamination.

Medical Officer of Health Jim Miller is advising people in the Bay of Plenty not to eat any seafood, including shellfish and fin fish from waters around the Astrolabe Reef.

Health authorities are warning not to collect or consume any seafood from water with visible oil contamination.

In particular, people should not collect shellfish from Motiti Island and avoid any seafood that has off or petrol like odours.

Although there is no evidence of the oil spill reaching the coastline, conditions are continually changing.

Maritime New Zealand has started collecting and testing seafood, and further advice will be issued in due course.

This health advisory will remain in place until further notice.
