Wildlife victim count rises

One more oiled blue penguin has been taken to the Oiled Wildlife Response Centre in Te Maunga for treatment.

The robust male penguin was brought to the centre at 8pm on Saturday.

Part of the care for the oiled birds is feeding them. Stomach tubes are used to force feed the penguins fluids and mackerel.

Wildlife Response Centre spokesperson Brian Gibson says the penguin was found with half his body covered in oil, but he is in a stable condition.

'He is a very robust male so I think we is going to be okay.”

Brian says the penguin is being washed and treated this morning.

There are now six blue penguins and two shags undergoing treatment for oil coatings at the centre.

They are the wildlife victims of the oil slick emanating from the container ship Rena, which is aground on the Astrolabe Reef.
