Fine weather returns to the Bay

In today's weather forecast we are expecting a cloudy morning with a few showers, becoming fine by midday. Also gusty southwesterlies, dying out at night.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 27 and an overnight low of 13 degrees.

High tide is at 9.10am and low tide at 3.20pm. Sea temperature is 20 degrees. There's an average sea swell of .3m. Sunset tonight is at 8.31pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite times are between 7 and 10pm.

This day in NZ history in 1832 New Zealand's first cricket match was held. Church Missionary Society (CMS) leader Henry Williams gave the male pupils (Māori and Pākehā) of his mission school at Paihia in the Bay of Islands a rare day off.

In 1913 on this day the waterfront strike ended. The Great Strike of 1913, which had begun in late October when Wellington waterside workers stopped work, finally ended when the United Federation of Labour conceded defeat.

In world history on this day in 1802 the United States bought the Louisiana territory from France. In 1924 Adolf Hitler was released from prison after serving less than one year of a five year sentence for treason. In 1933 the German government announced 400,000 citizens were to be sterilized because of hereditary defects.

In 1938 the first electronic television system was patented. In 1963 four thousand people crossed the Berlin Wall to visit relatives under a 17-day Christmas accord.

Ten years ago today in 2007, Queen Elizabeth II became the oldest monarch in the history of the UK; previously, that honour belonged to Queen Victoria.
