This day in NZ history in 1874 the Cospatrick fire killed 470 people. En route to Auckland laden with immigrants, the Cospatrick caught fire off the Cape of Good Hope.

The tragedy has been described as New Zealand's worst civil disaster. Only three survived.

In 1947 on this day 41 died in Ballantyne's fire. The fire in Christchurch's prestigious department store was one of the worst in New Zealand's history.

And in world history on this day, in 1477 William Caxton published the first dated book printed in England. In 1865 Mark Twain's first story was published. In 1928 Mickey Mouse made his film debut in Steamboat Willie, the first animated talking picture
