Fine weather on the cards for Tauranga

The weather forecast is for a fine spells, with a chance of morning showers and again at night. Northeast breezes.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 18 and an overnight low of 13 degrees.

Low tide is at 10am and low tide is at 4.20pm. Sea temperature is 16 degrees. There's an average sea swell of about .4m and sunset tonight is at 7.44pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 9and 11pm.

One hundred years ago today, on October 31 1917, the capture of Beersheba (Be'er Sheva in modern Israel) was a turning point in the struggle between the British and Ottoman Empires in the Middle East in the First World War.

The New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade played a key part in the capture of the town.

Also on this day in NZ history, in 1985, Keri Hulme's first novel, 'The Bone People', won the prestigious Booker Prize. It was not only New Zealand's first Booker, but the first debut novel ever to win.

In 2015, on this day the All Blacks successfully defended the World Cup title. The All Blacks became the first team to win back-to-back Rugby World Cup competitions, and the first to win the title three times.

Captain Richie McCaw was the first man to hold the Webb Ellis Cup aloft in triumph at two tournaments.

Five hundred years ago today in 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the church at Wittenberg in Germany.

Luther's theories and writings inaugurate Protestantism, shattering the external structure of the medieval church and at the same time reviving the religious consciousness of Europe.

In 1952 on this day the United States exploded the first hydrogen bomb at Enewetok Atoll in the Pacific.

In 1984 Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by two Sikh members of her bodyguard.

Today is Sir Peter Jackson's birthday. He was born in 1961. He shares his birthday with Benoit Fourneyron, who invented the water turbine, Juliette Low who founded the Girl Scouts, Larry Mullen Jr., drummer for U2 and English romantic poet John Keats.
