A crash near the Wairoa River bridge on State Highway 2 has caused disruption to traffic this afternoon.

A police spokesperson says the crash, involving a heavy motor vehicle and a truck, occurred at around 11.40am.

One lane was blocked for a time, but the road is now clear.

There were reports of minor injuries and the drivers were assessed at the scene by ambulance staff.

A reporter at the scene says there is still debris on the road, and traffic is approaching Tauranga slowly, causing a ‘massive backlog of traffic' towards Whakamarama.
