Crafar s animal concern

Allan Crafar says animal welfare is the main concern following the announcement that the dairy farm group owned by the Crafar family is in receivership.
Receiver Korda Mentha took over four companies and the 22 farms in the Crafar family group on Monday.

As well as financial trouble the farms have come under criticism recently for maltreatment of animals and Minister of Agriculture and Forestry David Carter has ordered an inquiry into this. Receiver Michael Stiassny has indicated that the welfare of the animals is his immediate priority as he takes over the farm.
Allan Crafar says he has no intention of helping receiver Michael Stiassny, but says caring for the animals is his priority, especially given the recent cold snap.
'Michael Stiassny said you've got to help us get the value of these farms up; well like hell I do, I'll get the values down. I'll be like Samson, I'll pull the temple down on you. I'll lose everything, you'll lose everything. I won't let the cows go hungry though. I won't let the cows or the sharemilkers suffer, but I won't help you.”
Federated Farmers dairy director Lachlan McKenzie says they offered the receivers their assistance in keeping the farms running; but their offer is not being taken up at this stage.
'We said that if for some reason they needed some extra expertise or manpower, we would try and access that for them.”
Lachlan says the offer was politely declined.
'Basically they are saying the systems are running and there's people milking the cows and feeding the cows on a daily basis and the milk's still being collected. Our purpose was to make sure the staff were feeling comfortable and the livestock and the animal welfare issues have been dealt with, and they have been.”
