Excavator to 'munch' old council block

A 50-tonne excavator has been brought in to help demolish the council building on Willow Street.

A 50-tonne excavator with a large mechanical claw is about to begin 'munching” its way through Council's old administration building on Willow Street.

The excavator is being brought in as part of the mechanical demolition stage of the project.

The concrete will be transported by truck to a concrete recycle facility and reused.

It is anticipated that this stage of the demolition will take at least four weeks, weather dependent.

A number of safety measures and appropriate noise, traffic and pedestrian controls will continue in place to minimise the impact on traffic, pedestrians, businesses and services during this stage of the demolition.

Council's Customer Service Centre and the Tauranga Library remain open as normal.

City Transformation Committee Chair Larry Baldock says he thanks the community for their patience during the deconstruction and demolition.

'We are on a journey to become an internationally competitive city, and revitalising our city centre and our waterfront is a key component to this. The demolition of the old administration building is a short term disruption for long term gain.”

The demolition can be viewed from a web cam feed on our website http://www.tauranga.govt.nz/our-future/projects/heart-of-the-city/civic-administration-building

Council is partnering with Little Big Events to activate the space once the building is demolished and the site has been cleared.

'Our Place” will be an exciting temporary addition to the city centre list of things to do until investment decisions are made on the future of the space and the site is developed.

Council resolved in September 2016, as part of a Long Term Plan amendment, to demolish the administration building as soon as practically possible, following the discovery of toxic mould in the building in November 2014.

Willful destruction

The building is sound and weather tight, merely needed a couple a dollars spent for overdue maintenance. That sadly and instead is the lamest excuse ever to completely destroy the building. Instead of spending at best $1m the intention of officials is to spend $200m. The gap is mind-numbing!!!! The reasons are beyond belief!!!!

Stop moaning all the time at everything that pulses

MISS ADVENTURE, you are dead right, it is wilful destruction,if it was built on mud who signed it off then, like you say, it would have taken 2 half yrs to plan their new BAUBLES,its a terrible waste, we use to have a resident bus stop opposite baycourt but they pulled it down, how many are still sick with mould problems, one person gets sick and its pulled down, gosh, they spent a lot of money on it when problem arose, and water blasted it and cleaned outside of it not long ago,and now its gone, money wasted again,we never have names of people who sign this stuff off, and are faceless, anyway MISS ADVENTURE keep up the good work,my thoughts only on this,KEEP UP THE BEST NEWS SUNLIVE,Thankyou, 10-4 out. phew.
