What’s On? America’s Cup & Music

Good morning, SunLive readers, and welcome to the final Sunday of winter.

We did it guys – we made it through the cold, gloomy months, and now we're poised to welcome spring in less than a week's time.

Showers turning to rain this evening are forecast today, with a high of 16 degrees and a low of 13.

It might pay to bring a jacket or umbrella this afternoon for those planning to catch a glimpse of the America's Cup. Peter Burling will be bringing the Auld Mug down to the Edgewater Fan on the CBD waterfront (at the Red Square end) at 1pm.

A short ceremony, including a haka performed by Tauranga Boys' College senior students and speeches, will take place with a chance to hear from the athletes and Mayor Greg Brownless.

After the ceremony, the athletes and the Auld Mug will be available for photos to give everyone the chance to get their own piece of America's Cup history.

Be prepared for more traffic than usual – the council recommends using public transport if you can.

Tonight there's also a free show at Totara Street from roots reggae performers the Jesse Morris Band.

Featuring the killer rhythm section of TK Bass Dread and the Dolphin Dr Hugh Jones, this powerhouse all-star lineup is Australia's number one east coast conscious roots reggae act. Vocal harmonies, African and Caribbean rhythms, handmade guitars, dubbed out loops and conscious lyrics.

Doors open at 5pm, with the show beginning at 6pm, Totara Street.

Not your thing? Well, they're not compulsory events. Check out what else is on below:

They've ruined it !

The old traditional romance of the race died when it became less about brilliant naval architecture and seamanship and more about CAD. Also the politics. My own enthusiasm for it dwindled when Dennis famously walked out of his Paul Holmes interview. Easily fixed though. Make a rule that only displacement hulls can enter.
