Push for accurate enrolment

Tauranga, Bay of Plenty and Waiariki electorate residents are being urged to make sure they are correctly enrolled to vote in this year's general election and referendum on the voting system.

Registrar of electors Lesley Christophers is urging everyone to enrol in time for the November 26 general election.

Each year thousands of votes don't count because people either aren't enrolled or enrolled correctly.

'Anyone who has shifted flat or house needs to update their address details with us and anyone who hasn't enrolled yet needs to do it now,” says registrar of electors Lesley Christophers.

'Every vote matters and people need to enrol today to make sure they can have their say about who runs the country, and how we elect our parliaments in the future – to make voting as easy as possible people need to enrol now.”

People need to be enrolled by October 26 to have their details on the printed electoral roll used in polling and advance voting places.

If they enrol now they will get an EasyVote information pack sent to them before election day which includes information on how, when and where to vote.

'The EasyVote pack includes the EasyVote card to take when you vote. This makes voting easier.”

Anyone who enrols after October 26 will have to cast a special declaration vote on election day, which takes about five times longer.

Enrolling is easy. Enrolment forms are available by Freetexting your name and address to 36 76, or by visiting www.elections.org.nz, PostShop or calling 0800 36 76 56.
