Updated: 11.15am. Emergency services responding to a gas main rupture on Maunganui Road, opposite McDonalds, appear to have the event under control.

A reporter at the scene says the road in not blocked, although there are cones near the property where some construction appears to be underway.

The gas utility representative is at the site to turn the gas supply off, so the break can be repaired.

SunLive understands police have been called to the scene to help with traffic control.

If possible, motorists are asked to avoid the area to let firefighters deal with the rupture.
