Omokoroa volunteer fire fighters were called to the end of Prole Road, Omokoroa, this afternoon to rescue a 15 year old boy who broke his leg jumping off the railway bridge over the Waipapa River.

It's understood he was with others of a similar age. He has been taken to Tauranga hospital.

'When we got here he was still in the river,” says Omokoroa chief fire officer Ian Blunt.

'Two of us pulled him out. We got him out on the bank made him comfortable, kept him warm and put his leg in a splint. Our first response did a great job putting his leg in a splint and looking after him until ambulance got here.

'Then we put him the stokes basket and just delivered him to the ambulance.”

The river is tidal at the railway bridge, with high tide today being at 3.24pm at the Tauranga entrance. The accident happened soon after 4pm.

'He landed in the water but I don't know what was in the water, maybe it wasn't deep enough,” says Ian. 'I'm not going to jump in there to find out.”
