Philanthropist, economist, bird lover and Mount resident Gareth Morgan has today announced the formation of a new political party.
The Opportunities Party seeks to 'improve fairness, and give many more New Zealanders the opportunity to fulfil their aspirations,” according to a press release from the Morgan Foundation.
As a result of this new venture, Gareth has resigned as a trustee of the foundation, in order to focus on his political campaign.
He calls the Opportunities Party 'a rebellion against the politics of mediocrity and the inertia of the established parties.”
Some of the party's key focus areas are:
- fairness
- reduced poverty
- housing affordability
- environmental sustainability and making the most from our natural capital
- national pride
Gareth says they will be able to work with either National or Labour.
The party logo is the Wā kāinga/Home flag, which was the winning design in a new flag competition held by the Morgan Foundation last year.
Gareth says the next few months will be spent convincing voters the party will produce 'a substantial improvement in wellbeing.”
'The changes I'm talking about will benefit us, our children and our grandchildren,” he says.
'But to effect change we need to be in parliament and in sufficient numbers to have undue influence.”
More information on the new party can be found on their website.

Typical comment from someone who can,t even do a minimal amount of research before writing a stupid comment.Google Garth Morgan Re The Morgan Foundation plus he donated $50Million to the foundation ,I would say he knows a considerable amount regarding fairness and poverty. What,s your claim to fame?
Go Gareth

It all sounds positive and we need more debate and action in NZ.

A better fitting logo would be a pussy cat in a metal pohutukawa tree.
What next..

Mmm to be fair, he has got a lot of spare money and what else could he do with it? He's seen off the entire NZ cat population, got a new monument outside his castle and still has heaps of spare money and time. Seems a natural progression to me.......

Why bother/disrupt then? Animal lovers, beware. Morgan has become better known more recently for his wacky ideas, remember the pretty tree with a fish hook? His Kiwi saver scheme often rated as one of the dearest for fees under his management. He may be philanthropic, many more act in the same vein but the general public is not often of aware of who they are, and how far their generosity spreads, quite silently. Often they become known only after they have died, because their preference was to keep their good deeds quiet. Words are free, and Morgans words are no different to many others who aspire to change. Ive read all tabs on the website link in the above article, and the only link which gives a huge amount of detail is Know Gareth, oops, all about me. Nothing inspires my support.
