The distress call was made through marine channels after a personal locator beacon linked to a boat near Kennedy Bay was activated late this morning, says Maritime NZ spokesman Steve Rendel.

While local fire services were called to assist, the remote location at Taiharuru Bay north of Kennedy Bay, meant the rescue helicopter was the better option.

The injured man has been flown to hospital. His age is inknown. More later.
