Priority One CEO Andrew Coker is welcoming claw backs in the 2011 Budget, but believes ‘middle income' earners in the Western Bay of Plenty will suffer.
Finance Minister Bill English announced a raft of cost saving measures in the Budget on Thursday afternoon.
Along with government cost saving changes to KiwiSaver, Working for Families and the student loan scheme, $5.2 billion from the public sector will also be ‘redirected' to core frontline services.
Andrew says the government is facing a 'substantial, structural deficit” that must be reigned in.
He says if the measures were not implemented, New Zealand faced a credit downgrade, forcing mortgage interest rates to rise, business costs to increase and higher consumer prices.
Andrew says the changes to Working for Families will hit middle income earners in the region.
'The Western Bay of Plenty has a substantial number of small businesses so any changes to Working for Families will be an issue for them.”
In his address to the house, Bill English supplied figures showing that since the beginning of the year, government has borrowed an average of $380 million a week.
Government wants to reduce that to $100 million next year and be in a position to repay debt by 2014-15.
It is hoped net debt will be eliminated by 2024.
'For a country that is determined to catch up, in terms of growth, with Australia, the deficit is a fundamental issue we have to deal with.
'At the same time build our skills base, build our investment in education and science and then play catch up.”
Andrew says the government's sale of some energy assets will have a positive impact on the economy.
'It will increase investment, create a positive investment environment and free up much needed cash for government initiatives and investment in infrastructure, which we need here.”

Fair Budget???

What changes were made to the MPs retirement scheme? - NONE. We have paid taxes to pay for our energy assets already and now we can pay for them again by buying shares or watch those assets go overseas - same as Contact Energy. For all the assets we have sold we are no better off. Record deficit is the result. All we have achieved is export the profits from our best assets to overseas owners. We should be investing the annual profits into infrastructure and not a one off payment from when we sell profitable businesses. As for the finance minister who is responsible, he is the man who fleeced taxpayers for tens of thousands of dollars by getting payments to live in his own house - if he was a beneficiary you would be baying for blood.
DEBT AND MORE DEBT

Understand the need to borrow to pay the bills, at least they are cutting the clotyh to suit the cause here. all be it that the debt is rising in the short term. I wish TCC would look at the same plan, MEANINGFUL debt repayment by 2014 and clear the debt by 2024.
In short...

i was listening to the prime-minster yesterday and liked his comment something like NZ should be a country of iniative not of envy. In our copuntry all people are free to become a politician if they want to!! while I agree a tighten up would be good. Do state-owned business's actually benefit tax-payers?? or do they just hold back competition and cost tax-payers a fortune to bail them out every time they go bust or are badly run?? And NZers receive a large amount of government support compared to most countries
Too much borrowing for tax cuts

Funny how the government gave us the tax cuts and now we in serious trouble! They should have reversed the tax cuts to pay for a kiwisaver scheme that is needed - saving money and money for middle income earners with kids and mortgages. They are hurting just as much as the lower income earners who are renting. Not to mention the GST rise, petrol rise - which causes everything to go up as does the ETS all of which were NOT aliviated with the meager tax cuts
