Reports have come in of a light earthquake in the Eastern Bay of Plenty measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale.

The quake was located 15 km southeast of Murupara at a depth of 51km says the GeoNet website.

Opotiki resident contacted the SunLive newsroom to say the quake struck at 1.10pm and felt a couple of 'decent earthquake jolts”.

There have been no reports of any damage.
