Good crowds at Fieldays

Day two of Fieldays opened this morning with good crowds gathering in the morning mist.

Sun Media reporter Elaine Fisher says new arrivals gathering for the second day look to be at least a match for the more than 28,000 who attended the first day of the national Fieldays.

Today's opening event was the Innovation Awards Breakfast - rewarding winning entrants for their impressive contributions to the future of the agriculture industry.

NZ National Fieldays Society CEO Peter Nation says the level of ingenuity is second to none.

'It's great to see the number of Innovations entrants growing every year.

'You're looking at innovations today that could very well revolutionise agribusiness tomorrow.

Peter congratulates all the inventors, saying innovation is the foundation of the industry.

'We don't grow, we don't advance without stopping and asking the pertinent questions about where we are, how we got here and what it will take to move forward. Looking around the Innovations Centre today, the right questions are being addressed.”

Fieldays is the largest agriculture event in the Southern Hemisphere and was opened yesterday by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Bill English, along with Te Radar and Peter.

The Rural Bachelors completed the first two on-site challenges on Wednesday, including a quiz, and the much anticipated blind dates.

Most of the Bachelors didn't score very well in the Blind Date Challenge.

The audience's favourite answer in the quiz came from Tasmanian Peter Damen, who when asked what the biggest pest-protected mountain in New Zealand was, answered 'Mount Teriyaki”.

The Bachelors have their agricultural skills, attitude and all-round charisma tested in a number of competitive challenges over the four days of the National Fieldays including log splitting, speed fencing, construction, off-roading and speed mating, with a few fun twists to test their character.

Today the bachelors faced the Salad Challenge in the Kitchen Theatre at 9.30am, Construct & Create on Entertainment on South St at 11am, the Tractor Pull Challenge at 1pm and the Fencing Challenge at the Fairbrother site at 2.30pm.
