Farmers' market top in the polls

The Tauranga Farmers' Market is looking set to take out the top award at the 2011 Taste Famers' Market Awards.

Tauranga currently leads, with Hawke's Bay creeping into second and Hamilton rounding out the top three spots, but like all competitions it is the final rush to the polls that will determine the winner.

Market Manager Trixie Allen says the public have been really willing to vote and to be part of the recognition for the Tauranga Farmers' Market in these awards.

'The enthusiasm of the stallholders has created a level of excitement at the market. We have been in the lead all the way, but it is the final burst of energy that will give the results of which market will be the winner,” says Trixie.

'Some 50 farmers' markets nationwide from in the far North in the Bay of Islands, to the deep South, have been inspired to showcase their market to the public and bring about a new awareness of what is fresh and local in their regions.

'This is an opportunity to support local growers and producers of this region. Get fresh, get local and support your market, the Tauranga Farmers' Market.”

The awards are an opportunity for the public to enter a competition when they vote to win a trip for two to Singapore with Singapore Airlines. The Taste Magazine, in conjunction with Radio Live and The Breeze radio stations, The Pantry Cookery School, Crown Plaza and Marketground, have all been great sponsors and supporters of these inaugural awards.

Hard copy voting forms are available at the market if you are unable to get to a computer to vote online. To vote online visit www.taurangafarmersmarket.co.nz

Always great to go the Farmers Market, good stuff and great prices for all, hope that TCC do not try and take it over like the Historic Village.

Could you please explain your comment... 'hope that TCC do not try and take it over like the Historic Village.' As I have always been under the belief that the Tauranga Farmers Market is run by the participants on a school site, which is nothing life the setup of the Historic Village.

Council & Farmers Market

Tauranga City Council has no interest in, authority over, the Farmers Market, I'm guessing - aside from applauding it's ongoing contribution and success as I do!
