Green waste trial proves popular

The Thames-Coromandel District Council is temporarily closing the green waste drop-offs for its bio-solids composter in Whitianga.

Council says following an overwhelming response to its green waste drop-off trial, it cannot accept any more because they don't have room at the site next to the composter plant on Moewai Road.

'Thank you to everyone who took the time to bring us their garden clippings, with items that won't go through our mulcher already sorted out,” says council.

'We've been mulching your green waste and mixing it with the biosolid product that comes out of our wastewater treatment plant to put through the composter.

'The end result is clean and safe Grade Aa compost that we've been using on our parks and reserves.”

The composter will continue to operate using the store of green waste people have already dropped off, plus suitable green waste taken from our refuse transfer stations.

Until council is able to resume taking usable green waste at the biosolids composter site, green waste can be dropped off as usual at council's refuse transfer stations.
