Discoloured water found in harbour

The Thames-Coromandel District Council is appealing for information that will help track down the source of discoloured water discovered in the Whangamata harbour.

Area manager Garry Towler says the pink coloured water was found in the upper reaches of the harbour by locals out on a mid-morning walk today.

'We are very disappointed to see this happening in such a beautiful spot,” says Garry.

'We are in the process of identifying exactly what went into the water and we are also following leads which may help us find the cause.”

Council and Veolia contractors responded to the call on Tuesday morning and have since pumped the discoloured water to the wastewater system for further treatment.

Some minor discolouration remains on rocks and vegetation at the site.

If you saw or know anything about the discoloured water in the Whangamata harbour contact the Thames-Coromandel District Council's Whangamata Area Office on 07-868-0200.
