An online petition has been launched to try to overturn the Tauranga City Council's decision to sell Historic Village land to TECT.
Councillors voted to sell TECT the village land for a community hub last week. Read more here.
So far, 85 people have shown their opposition to the sale of Historic Village land.
It's thought the hub will solve a lot of drainage issues at the village, bring life to the village, help with its debt, improve greenspace and the addition of a covered stage can be an asset for future events.
The decision is being met with opposition from the Friends of the Historic Village who have set up an online petition.
According to the online petition, council's decision was made without widespread community consultation.
So far 85 people have signed the petition.

Sell it all

The Historic Village is a lost cause that will always require financial assistance. So unload as much of it as you can fast.
I want a different petition

It's great that the Council has at last allowed a community trust TECT to put money into the Village and try and give it some life back. There will always be whiners, most of whom never put their money where their mouths are. The community groups there deserve decent dry accommodation not the current dingy damp places in my opinion.
Should have read Sunlive

Those that didn't know about the proposed sale of part of the Village for a community building obviously didn't read Sunlive where it has received heaps of publicity. That said it seems a good idea, nothing could be worse that the current state of affairs and lack of people there.
Bang on...

Annalist, as half the relics have been moved from the Stand area, including headstones from the cemetery, bring it all back, create an "Historic Precinct" incorporating the Elms, but can you imagine the council doing anything for the lasting benefit of our city wisely and with decent imagination.
Never heard of Friends of the Village

Just doing some research and can't find any record of Friends of the Historic Village. Let's hope this isn't a cynical ploy to gain misguided support. But anyway, can someone tell us who they are, when they were set up and most importantly how much money they have donated to the Village over the years?

The reason you have not heard of the friends of the Village, is because you possibly really don't give a damn, jut like to whinge at people who do.
Annalist reflects the process

Annalist reflects the reality of this process and mindset that exists with those who would choose to undermine the Historic Village and erode it's future potential. There is NO financial windfall to reduce alleged debt, just building and parking that will destroy the 'Village Green'. Ideal land is available to TECT to meet it's goals directly adjacent the Historic Village, that would compliment and add value. If TECT has ANY motivation to enhance the Historic Village this would be done, can be done, separate to any 'head office' development. Annalist and others, your research powers are abysmal. A simple Google will identify the 'Friends of the Village' structure and the ignored Historic Village Strategy that WAS consulted on at great length in 2012. http://villageon17.co.nz/friends.aspx
Sorry Murray but the reality is different

I've been to the village plenty of times including the once or twice a year anything is held on the green. I've never heard of the friends of the village. Compare this to Friends of Baycourt who actually do things. This latest naysaying seems to me like a lot of nonsense from people who don't like the fact that the endless talk has ended and somebody is actually, god forbid, doing something.
councillors, Murray and the Village

Let's look at what successive councils have done for the Village. Not a lot it seems. I can't find any record of former councillor Murray Guy supporting any ratepayer funding? I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong. I can find plenty about the Council Murray was on injecting heaps of $$$ into Baypark and even at one stage purchasing a Speedway business. So Murray, what's your solution for the Village and if it involves rates money what did you do about the Village all those years you were a councillor?

Annalist, there really are friends of the village - they do a lot of free maintenance, etc. Just shows that you don't know much about our city amenities. quick search on google will prove the point, or follow the web address given by Murray Guy. http://www.villageon17.co.nz/
Friends of the Village

The "Friends of the Village" are not these people with the petition. They have usurped the name for nefarious purposes to derail this positive project. The people with the petition do not work at the Village and they need to change their name. They have spread a lot of misinformation.
