Delays over settling a stormwater issue at the Tauranga Marine Precinct are expected to be resolved this month, according to papers posted online by Tauranga City Council.
The progress report to the council's monitoring committee meeting today says processing the stormwater consent for the $10 million project is on hold while consultation is undertaken with an iwi wanting the city and regional council to be more considerate of the combined total discharges into the harbour.
Stalled stormwater issues have delayed Marine Precinct consent.
The stormwater discharge consent is to allow water from the hardstand to be discharged to the harbour after specialist water processing.
The regional council received a concern from one iwi that the regional council wasn't assessing the cumulative effects of all stormwater discharge consents being processed by the two councils – after the project team undertook consultation with all affected parties associated with the new stormwater consents including Iwi, Port of Tauranga and neighbours.
The opposition is not aimed directly at the Marine Precinct application, says project manager Phil Waredale's report to the committee, but it has resulted in the processing of the application being put on hold.
'The project team has been meeting with the relevant iwi and has been discussing ways that the Marine Precinct consent can address their concerns through conditions,” says the report.
The Marine Precinct project team is also discussing with the city council's stormwater team about extending and upgrading the two stormwater pipes collecting water from the wider Sulphur Point catchment that currently run under the Marine Precinct hardstand.

Even more money down the gurgler

If a boat is a hole in the water into which people pour money, it is fast becoming clear that this marine precinct will be a hold in the water into which council pours money.
Yet NO action on developer discharges to the harbour

This past week I have watched in horror as silt and nutrient laden stormwater has entered our harbour to the degree evident to the eye as it blossomed out from points of entry. This is a repeat event BUT the Bay of Plenty Regional Council seemingly refuses to hold Developers to account, specifically on this occasion, The Lakes upper Pyes Pa. Regional. Iwi and the BOPRC need to revisit priorities if they are genuinely concerned about the health of our harbour.
Consultation

Ok so we can either spend millions on consultation and delays or we can just hand over $ to the equivalent of 10% of project cost to keep them all happy and save $ in the long run, oh and dont forget a couple of paid consultancy positions for the objectors.
Where else is it to go

Before being reclaimed all the storm water went straight into the sea.

We must make sure that toxic materials ie old paint, oil, antifouling paint, and many other toxic matter commonly found in a marine service precinct must be collected and treated and not just allowed to run into the harbour.
OMG
