Dog owner put on notice

A Tauranga dog breeder fears a 'death warrant” has been signed for her pedigree Italian Maraemma sheep dog called 'Polar.”

The Western Bay of Plenty District Council has handed a written order to Carol Gunn of Omanawa saying she has fourteen days to downsize her Balagan kennels because of an alleged noise nuisance.

'The council has investigated a significant number of substantiated complaints of barking dogs at your (Omanawa Road) address,” the order reads.

And consequently the council has instructed Carol to remove three of the eight dogs from the property.

The order says the dogs to be removed 'are required to include Polar who has been identified as the primary barking source.”

'But Polar wasn't properly socialised as a pup” says Carol. He is untrustworthy and so in all conscience I can't part with him. He could never be a family dog.” She fears for his future.

Polar and the other dogs are Maremmas, Italian sheep dogs, big dogs with a big bark, an alert bark. Too big for neighbours it seems because in five and a half months the council claims it's had 37 complaints of excessive barking.

And the council has further warned if the barking nuisance does not improve with five dogs it may require Carol to reduce the size of her kennel even further.

'One of my dogs has a litter of four pups, another is due to give birth, one is old and sick and yet another has never lived anywhere else. Then there is Polar. What am I to do with them?”

She says she may have to surrender them to the council. 'They may have to come and take my children away.”

But the council says it's not looking to seize the dogs at this time and is looking to Carol as owner to take responsibility for ensuring its requirements are met.

And it says if the reduced number of Maremmas 'mitigates the noise nuisance then an increase in the number of kept dogs will be considered on an individual dog basis.”

A Real problem

Posted on 17-03-2016 16:44 | By missusmck

we have had real problems with a dog at the back of our place barking for up to 6 hours constantly. The owner has now had to fit it with a bark collar. It is terrible when you want to sit outside and have a BBQ with friends and you can't do that because of this dog constantly barking - it starts at 6.30a.m in the weekends and goes all damn day and according to the owner we have the problem!!! in fact we have been threatened if we phone dog control again that he is going to prosecute us (what the hell for I don't know). The animal control have had four complaints at once for this dog so it isn't just us.

Responsible dog owners don't keep breeding unnecessarily. There are too many dogs needing homes in shelters already. Save a life - adopt don't shop.

There's a lot of good breeders out there , most of the problem dogs are just mongrels that are wandering the streets Most people that pay good money look after there dogs

Debark Polar

Get Polar debarked by a Vet with good experience. Works great with no problems to the dog. He will still be able to bark but a lot softer. Just a small adjustment to his vocal chords . Much like humans when you loose your voice after a bad cold or too much drink and singing, smoking, at a all night party.

As a dog owner myself and with a lovely dog who likes to bark at anything flying over "his" no fly zone, I can imagine how you must be feeling. As much as it would be against everything the breed is bred for - perhaps if you need or want to keep all your dogs on your Rural property, and your neighbours are not able to take the barking any more your only cause of action will be to have the dogs de-barked. I am sure you will be able to keep everyone including your dogs who you most definitely must love as your own "children". Having the dog(s) de-barked would certainly have to be the better option than having to get rid of them. I wish you and your dogs all the best. Dogs by their very nature bark. That's how they talk.

Barking dogs a real pain

There's not much worse than trying to relax at home and having to suffer the constant barking and yapping of a dog. Council needs to come down hard on this. Carol needs to accept responsibility for any problem dog and sort it out.

We have visited Carols property on and off for over ten years with pre-school children as she has a little interactive farm which she kindly invites people to come and visit. A great experience for littlies on a very manageable site. Progressively over the years more and more people have established themselves near by , also remembering this lady has been on this site for a great deal of time and with the gully behind her property noise is only going to be amplified. Shame it has come to what it has as this lady is unique in the fact she is a loving caring gentle lady who is now the receipant of mirgration. Hopefully there is a sensible outcome for all persons concerned. Best of luck to all.

On the subject of de-barking.... should do the council at the same time? lol What about some sort of sound barrier between the kennels and the neighbours? If I were told to remove my dogs, I would record them barking... remove the dogs, then play the recording, night and day... but I am just a nice guy :)Seriously, there has to be an outcome suffice to please all.... I believe the kennels were there before the 'sensitive' neighbours chose to live next to the kennels? Surely that counts for something. The neighbours better have quiet cars, quiet dogs, quiet children etc, or I would be kicking up a major stink if I were the kennel owners

Councils weird rules!!!

How can one owner of 5 dogs be threatened when one dog barks and a Commercial Kennel gets away with up to 80 dogs barking continuously and the Tauranga City Council does NOTHING! with near 200 complaints having being lodged this year alone!
