Opposition to Tauranga City Council's preferred election option will be heard in the city council chambers on Thursday, starting 1pm.
The Local Government Commission is hearing an appeal against the Tauranga City Council's ward system where some councillors are elected at large and some from wards.
Election signs will soon be a regular site in Tauranga. File photo.
The appeal seeks either all the members of the Council being elected 'at large” from the City as a whole, instead of having the present mixture of 'at large” members and wards members or, alternatively, more members being elected 'at large” and fewer being elected from wards.
The hearing is open to the public and the media.
The Commissioners hearing the appeals will be:
- Commissioner Janie Annear (Chair)
- Temporary Commissioner Pauline Kingi
- Temporary Commissioner Leith Comer

Is there a Commissioners hearing for the appeal, and then a recommendation, maybe a ...referendum...smells like a gravy train to me.
At Large ..

They should all be at large .. as they are all at large technically once elected .. The 4 Tauranga Regional councillors are all at large ..
Keep local wards

We must definitely keep local Ward representation as it is now. One has think of only a couple of major issues affecting localised suburbs in the Tauranga area to see the need for locally elected councillors to be voices to speak for each neighbourhood. One only needs to try to access the CBD at 8.00 every working day through either the Ohauiti roundabouts or the Bayfair roading system to realise what an horrendous problem is roading in the eastern suburbs of the Mount/Papamaoa has become already and will be over the next couple of years. Each part of Tauranga has its own special needs, and I for one truly appreciate the likes of Steve Morris and Leanne Brown in getting the wider TCC to listen to our particular needs, as well as represent the wider Tauranga City area as they do as well.
AT LARGE.

Wards are ONLY OK if your ward has effective Elected Members. They should all be at large, then they would have to aquaint themselves with all areas.
