Last weeks of Phoenix input

People are being invited to add their final design tweaks to feedback on the Phoenix carpark/urban park proposal before the close-out on March 14.

The concept plans will be on display at the next Community Connections meeting at the Mount Maunganui Golf Club, 7pm on Thursday 10 March 2016. Council staff and elected members will be available to discuss the plans.

Public feedback is already influencing the next steps, says project manager Cheryl Steiner.

'We have received a lot of support for the concept of an urban park, and some really good feedback on ways that the design could be improved, from people using the online survey,” says Cheryl.

'This included adding more opportunities for activity in the space and better reflecting the character and identity of the local area. We have also had a peer review of the design and are working on opportunities to integrate community feedback on the design.”

A plan is being worked on to alleviate the concerns of the Mount Mainstreet Board about the loss of car parking.

'We have done some more design work on the alternative locations for the 55 carparks and also some assessment of actual walking distances that show that these proposed car parks are in very close proximity to the Mount Mainstreet area,” says Cheryl.

'These proposed new parking spaces will allow us to provide a fantastic multi-functional space for the community as well as deliver a similar level of car parking.”

The city council has been talking with the community about the concept plans since December 2015.

The plans on the council website have generated a lot of comment through the different feedback channels, ranging from support for the design, suggestions for improvement, and concerns about removing car parking from central Mount Maunganui.

The 2011 Phoenix Park deal that was on the table and undermined by vested interests within the City Council, Mount Maunganui Mainstreet and developers was basically this ... At NO capital or DIF cost to ratepayers BUT with an OPEX of $80K, a three level under cover Carpark that added car parks(not reduced)structure that doubled as a tsunami escape haven, a revamped and small green space with palms retained and a new shopping / office building. The $millions sitting idle in development fees could have been used to effectively purchase the freehold Zespri Land and retained as reserve, the income reducing debt. Under consideration was also the removal of cars adjacent Phoenix Park to establish a 'fume free dining pedestrian experience'. The new Councillors and community have been duped once again!

Are we short of cafes

I notice in the concept drawings is a cafe. Do we not have enough cafe's. Seem all warm fuzzies eto have some sort of appeal. Let's not jump to conclusions on what should be done here.
