New Food Act 2014 now in effect

The new Food Act 2014 which came into effect on March 1 will focus on the processes involved in producing food rather than the premises where it is made.

The Thames-Coromandel District Council explains the changes to the act reflect that not all food businesses are the same, so requirements have moved away from a one-stop-shop approach.

'For example if you have a dairy and re-heat pies you won't have the same requirements as the business that makes the pies.

'How the council will register, verify and deliver compliance also changes which means our fees will change.”

Public consultation on the proposed changes to fees and charges has now begun and will finish April 4, with submission hearings scheduled for April 14.

The new charges will then come into effect once the community's feedback is reviewed and adopted by council at its next full meeting.

'It is not necessary to attend a hearing for your submission to be considered, but it is an opportunity for you to speak in support of your submission, and for elected members to ask you questions. The public are welcome to attend and listen at the hearing,” says council.
