Getting to know your neighbour

Tauranga City Council community development committee chairman Steve Morris says grants are still available for those wanting to take part in Neighbours' Day Aotearoa.

Steve says the small grants are available through the community development match fund and is there to support activities for Neighbours' Day Aotearoa.

The event is an annual celebration of neighbourliness held on March 19 and 20, and aims to turn every community into a fun, friendly and safe place to live.

Steve says Tauranga residents are encouraged to come up with a plan to get to know their neighbours and apply for funding to help make it happen.

'Neighbours Day Aotearoa is a fantastic concept, and a great way to develop stronger, safer communities,” Steve says.

'This is exactly the spirit of the Community Development Match Fund, which aims to empower communities to improve and strengthen their neighbourhoods.”

What? Ratepayer money stolen under the name of "rates" and used for this!

Unbelievable

I wonder how many other gems like this the long suffering rate payer pays for. This is not why we pay rates. Not for this.

if you wanted to get to know your neighbours, you knocked on their door and said something like.."hello,I'm your new neighbour from #xx down the street". A conversation usually continues and probably arrangements to plan a gathering or maybe "street party" for the more ambitious. Seriously?..do we need our rates to go on this crap when we are perfectly capable of doing it ourselves if the desire is there?..I don't know if there are any restrictions on this "grant"..is it excuse for a few to booze up on the ratepayer?..or another way for the Council to try and take charge of our lives...WITH OUR MONEY!
