Serious issues in New Zealand's aged care industry are being discussed at a meeting in Tauranga.
The meeting at Baycourt is exploring concerns raised in an aged care report commissioned by the Labour and Green parties.
Western Bay of Plenty Grey Power president Doug Wilson at the Aged Care meeting on Monday.
Those attending the meeting have the opportunity to examine the economic implications of providing aged care, became more aware of the issues within the sector and explored international trends.
The aged care report follows an extensive inquiry, which involved 20 nationwide meetings, 1200 submitters and more than 450 submissions from caregivers, nurses and experts.
'Grey Power fully endorses this meeting as there are many unanswered questions that urgently need public clarification,” says Doug Wilson.
Labour's Sue Moroney and the Green Party's Sue Kedgley spoke at the meeting.
Sue says the report highlights serious concerns in the aged care industry.
'We heard many shocking stories of neglect and abuse, of residents not receiving proper medical attention or being slumped in front of a television all day without any other stimulation,” says Sue.

Aged Care Concerns

Has anyone noticed the irony of this "report" being called for by Labour & the Greens in 2009 just months after they were kicked out of Government? It begs the question: "Why didn't they address these issues when you had the chance and the funding surplusses to pay for it?"

Both Sue Kedgley and Sue Moroney could give up their gold-plated parliamentary super schemes and donate the money to Aged Care.

The comment by 14GK indicates his/her political leanings. It really does not matter what happened in the past otherwise we'd be doing the same as parliament's debates always referring to what the other party did or did do when in power. This issue needs addressing in an upolitical manner as it affects our current and aging people. I'm sure everyone would want to be treated in a dignified manner when their time comes.
Greens never listened to by Labour Govt

I hasten to point out to 14GK that the previous Labour Govt treated the Greens very badly and did NOT include the Greens in their coalition. 14GK can't be serious in blaming the Greens for not addressing these issues. It's good to see Sue Kedgley and the Greens looking into and drawing attention to this issue.
