A $530,000 facelift to the Mount Hot Pools is being sought by operators Bay Venues Ltd.
In a report to be discussed the first open council meeting of the year, the council controlled organisation says the plea is motivated by customer criticism, and a desire to lift the tired and dilapidated pools to a ‘must visit' status.
A facelift is being sought for the Mount Hot Pools.
Independent customer surveys taken in 2014, found the weak spots are the changing rooms and the pools failure to capitalise on the wider surrounds.
The intention is to demolish the existing reception area, and refurbish it to provide a more user-friendly, functional and welcoming space. Re-tile the floor, install a wind lobby for entry into the pool, repaint the ceiling, and construct a new reception counter and screens.
Landscaping work includes schist concrete columns, upgrade and install new gardens and planters, new outdoor furniture, re-paint surround walls and pool bulkheads, add more lockers, and re-tile outdoor showers.
The changing rooms also get an upgrade. Wall screens will be added. Existing seating will be replaced, vanity sinks and add vanity benches replaced and shower walls re-tiled and the ceiling painted.
The family changing room is to be converted into two separate areas, the floor and walls of new cubicles re-tiled.
Councillors will met today to discuss the proposal to put the project to public consultation.
There is $300,000 to upgrade the Mount Hot Pools allocated as a 'ballpark' figure included in the 2015/16 budget after the original $5M budget was removed from the Ten Year Plan.
Bay Venues Ltd says $200,000 originally included in the 2016/17 budget for solar panels at Baywave could also be available as the solar panels project didn't pass the business case test and will no longer continue.
Over the last three years, revenue from the hot pools has grown 23 per cent from $1.02M in 2012/13 to $1.25M in 2014/15, despite a four week closure.
The increase in revenue is a result of average revenue spend per customer increasing as a result of more tourists frequenting the facility – plus the introduction of several innovative ideas by the current management.
These included the ‘soak n the sounds' promo last August where pool visitors could listen and watch concerts on screen.
Also over the last two years there's been a steady drop in expenses from $807,000 in 2012/13, to $649,000 in 2014/15, with staffing requirements being carefully managed and new cost-reduction initiatives implemented. There is also less money being spent on chemicals with chlorine now being made in-house.
The Mount Hot Pools receives no operational grant from the city council. It contributes most to venues and programmes earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation.
In 2012/13 that totalled $216K which last year grew to $640,000.

Lest we forget

There is a cost to empire building and this is a fine example. Mere months after the last re-vamp! I wonder when the true cost of having the footpaths, cycleways and boardwalks will be realised?
Should NOT be in TCC budgets.

There is $300,000 to upgrade the Mount Hot Pools allocated as a 'ballpark' figure included in the 2015/16 budget after the original $5M budget was removed from the Ten Year Plan.... this is not right. BVL are supposed to own and manage these facilities and already receive significant $millions is subsidies from ratepayers effectively to spend at their discretion. Refurbishments, upgrades should ALL be part of the BVL business case and obligation. We repeatedly read of 'how good a job they are doing', yet it appears, actually aren't doing it! As for the pools, spare me! Various CCO and senior staff have poured $millions into this facility over recent years on upgrades, or has it just gone largely to consultants and reports?
Here we go again

some want a pretty place to work in. Enough is enough. Will cosmetic changes really bring more patronage? Proof needed, too of independent customer surveys from 2014??? BVL already get a fair slice of the pie, manage it properly.

I find all this so hard to believe - if BVL are not up for operating this ' Publicly owned' facility at an ongoing profit to the ratepayers then lets find someone who can - it has been a continual whining for more money for as long as I can remember - but then of course, ratepayers are a bottomless pit for these elitist 'so called' professional operators - what a laugh they are!
Oh my good

This outfit spent $4.5m and more on revamps and mischief a few years ago, then shut down for 6 months and spent another $2.5m odd on trivial stuff that in end result failed to even find the water leak of 50,000 liters a day. Now they want to have yet another go at it? Geeeezzzzz Wayne ... when will these Councilors wake up to BVL and the mess that they naturally create.
Look Around

If you want to do it right why not look at other similar venues for inspiration. Take a trip to Rotorua and have a look at Polynesian Spa, now that is a first-class, world renowned facility. Don't "penny-pinch" do it properly you have a captive local customer base and plenty of international visitors. NO ONE EVER REGRETS PAYING FOR QUALITY!!
Trim some unneeded bling.

The customer survey didn't even mention the reception area, according to this report, so why is mega-dollars being spent on that?

this person who wants it to be like polynesian spa, needs to ask themselves how much they charge to go in the place, the last time i visited the place it was $25 not been back since.
Excuse Me?

Why was this not factored in the last (quite expensive) upgrade/repair not all that long ago! Opportunity lost I'm sorry - the relatively recent Planning cycle is when BVL are supposed to bid for such things - not after funding that comes from rates has already been signed off! Spend some of your operating funds promoting the place!

A better comparsion is the Blue Baths in Rotorua secondly as residents we get a discount.I would certainly be more in favour of spending some money on this complex as opposed to all the other BS projects Crosby and his cronies want to spend money on IE flash new council offices, revamp of Baycourt, even a new stadium and God knows whatelse Oh yes the proposed waterfront project. Now even before this years annual plan is finalised they are proposing atleast 2.8% increase in rates.Take this plus the CAG proposed additions with Paul Adams quoted in the paper Ratepayers need to dig deeper in their pockets. Pretty daunting perhaps TCC had a winning ticket in the latest US lottery and have been keeping it a secret to surprise us that all these projects will be paid up front!!!! Note-Dreams are Free.
For the Locals

The pools primary function has been foe the locals, it is council owned for the people's enjoyment. Don't go upmarket to capture a few mega rich tourists and forget affordability for the locals.
Surprise Surprise

These must be the most regularly "refurbished" and costly pools to maintain in the country. I agree with other commentators that as BVL are running the business so well (according to TCC) then they should pay for any additional refurbishment themselves and not expect an additional subsidy from ratepayers. This is a great facility for Tauranga but I fail to see why it has to be upgraded again which will mean it will be closed again, I predict, for another 3 or 4 months. Absolutely unbelievable especially as stated the complex was "refurbished' at great expense recently.
