The Thames-Coromandel District and Waikato Regional councils are inviting the public to tsunami information open days to be held in Matarangi and Whangapoua this month.
To ensure as many people as possible can attend the two open days, they will be taking place on the Saturday and Sunday of the upcoming Auckland Anniversary Weekend.
The first open day takes place at the Matarangi Fire Station on Saturday, January 30, while the second session will be held at the Whangapoua Fire Station on Sunday, January 31. Both will be held from 10am to 3pm.
'The open days provide you with an opportunity to learn more about what we understand to be the tsunami threat to Whangapoua and Matarangi,” explains the Thames-Coromandel council.
'You'll also be able to talk directly with the tsunami scientists, hazard specialists and emergency managers that have worked on this project.”
Both councils are keen to hear what locals think should be the approach to managing the tsunami risk in these areas.
This includes learning about what emergency management procedures that should be adopted and what community education should be undertaken.
They are also interested to learn what locals think about coastal land use planning, such as restricting the location of facilities like kindergartens or rest homes being built in potential tsunami inundation paths.
