No tolerance for uninsured drivers

Eighty per cent of Bay of Plenty motorists recently surveyed by Canstar Blue New Zealand believe uninsured drivers have no business driving on the road.

Canstar's latest consumer satisfaction survey also shows in the past three years, 69 per cent of Bay drivers lodged claims due to car accidents, with 22 per cent of those involving uninsured drivers.

Ten per cent of local drivers surveyed also said they'd had valuable personal items stolen from their vehicles, but the survey's results show only six per cent had lodged insurance claims. There were also zero claims in the Bay lodged for stolen vehicles.

In regards to the types of policies taken out by Bay drivers, third party is the preferred with a result of 51 per cent.

But four per cent of local motorists have let their insurance policies lapse in the past 12 months, with 50 per cent of respondents saying this was due to financial reasons.

In total, 723 Kiwis across the country who currently pay for car insurance and made claims in the last three years were surveyed as part of the Canstar commissioned survey undertaken by Colmar Brunton.

The results show strong national support for all drivers in New Zealand to be insured, with 82 per cent of the 723 respondents believing ‘uninsured drivers have no place on the roads'.

In total, 68 per cent of respondents lodged claims due to accidents, with 24 per cent of those involving an uninsured driver. Five per cent lodged claims for items stolen from vehicles, and four per cent for stolen cars.

Nationally, 62 per cent of Kiwi drivers have third party insurance, while eight per cent had let policies lapse in the past 12 months, with 61 per cent citing financial reasons for their decision.

Based on the survey's results, AA Insurance was also named overall winner of the Canstar Blue Customer Satisfaction award – Car Insurance for the fourth year in a row now.

The insurance company was rated 5-stars by its customers in every category across the board - the only insurance provider in the survey to do so.

Canstar Blue NZ uses market research to determine customer satisfaction ratings across a range of products and services to help consumers make the best purchasing decisions for their needs.

What a crock

They only surveyed people who had already bought insurance and made a claim.....this is not a news story, it is a totally unbalanced self serving push by the insurance industry to have insurance made compulsory. The insurance industry cannot be trusted , least of all to make these decisions.

All drivers should be insured. CC8 just wait until you have to claim against an uninsured driver, good luck with that one!

I share your dislike and mistrust of insurance companies, generally, although there are a few notable exceptions. In the case of drivers, though, it really SHOULD be compulsory (and it is... everywhere I have lived, except in NZ). I don't honestly believe the insurance companies are pushing this (although they obviously would be pleased if it becomes Law), rather, it is something that WE should be pushing to protect ourselves and our community. If you can't afford even 3rd party, then you certainly can't afford to take the necessary responsibility if you damage someone else's vehicle, so it follows you should not be on the road. End of story.

I guess...

it does sound a little "biased"...but I would certainly like to see at least Compulsory "3rd Party" insurance introduced. I would have seen more benefit in introducing this at the time that the ACC Licensing levy was reduced..many still claim "financial restriction" as an excuse for not having this also..even AFTER it was reduced!

Are obviously more important that way when you crash others can be envious .. No insurance then no Wof, Rego,no maintenence, petrol drive off's, fines on tab,so the minority can carry you again picking up your debits. Compulsory insurance same as ACC levies or no insurance no entitlements no balls.

It's the old story - the responsible people suffer because of those who want a free ride - this applies to most property insurance. When something goes wrong the do gooders in our society cry until the Govt or the public cough up to help the parasites out - if you can't afford it then you should not have it - none of us are born with others owing something to us! Rego - warrant of fitness and at least third party insurance are all necessary components of owning a car (IMHO)

I did not say vehicles shouldn't be insured? I said it shouldn't be up to the insurance companies to make it compulsory. Insurance is a scam full stop. Even ACC is a scam....it does not work well, it is still full of litigation and it does not serve the weak and poor as it is supposed to as a social tool. The rich and powerful use it to support injuries received in their sports and recreation, and the poor who are hurt at work or otherwise not by their own fault are left to suffer and do their best to fight for help. As proved by the hch earthquake debacle Insurance companies invest the premiums they receive and DO NOT pay out from them or the dividends , instead they increase future premiums to pay out the previous claims and/or fold and ask for government assistance to prop them u

"insurance is a scam" - what planet are you on?? "ACC is a scam" - what have you been smoking? Please give us your learned opinion as to what might be a better option for insurance & ACC.

Scam who say's

Bet the majority that say all insurance is just a scam don't have insurance except for ACC and only that because they don't have an option. Never mind when they need insurance they can just go on TV or run a Give a Little page so those of us who do have insurance will pay up for them.

Should be mandatory

I wonder if this is one of the reasons that make NZ roads twice as deadly as developed countries.

define responsibility!

Posted on 14-01-2016 23:03 | By CC8

Conversely One could argue that if everybody acts responsibly there is no need for insurance. Those that buy insurance, do so, so they do not have to be wholly financially responsible for their actions. In reality, if you are insured and you have an accident with an uninsured third party, your insurance company pay you and deal with the UTP, if they do not squirm their way out of the whole claim.

Enjoy your visit to our planet, and I do hope you have only a short stay Visa, please take your inane ramblings home with you!!!!, 3rd party insurance should be mandatory when you get a liscence to drive a vehicle, no ifs or buts!!!, this should be a law set by government, not insurance companies, on your planet of " milk and honey and all things nice " your theory may work, not here though.
